Pictures of me & the ancestral manse
Oprah Winfrey once said that her dream was to find the plantation her ancestors lived on, and BUY it. Well I know which plantation my family came from, but I'll never have the money to buy it! Arvah Hopkins, my grandmother's grandfather, owned Goodwood during and after the Civil War. Family secret was, that he was a Yankee, and had to buy it to impress the family of the woman he wanted to marry.

One thing interesting I found out, was that he married the daughter of John Branch, who was the territorial governor of Florida at that time. Our great, great, great grandfather (I think I got that right!) was Governor!

I've never been to Goodwood, but when driving mom to get her radiation we would have to drive right by there. It's right behind the hospital. It's a museum now.

My sister Jeanne was nice enough to take me to "Goodwood Cafe" for lunch, and afterwards we took a tour of the house. It was AWESOME! And they were very excited to have descendants of Arvah Hopkins come visit.

They have little clippets from a book that Arvah's neice wrote, of her visits to Goodwood during it's heyday, placed all over the place.

Anyway, here are the photos I took, eventually one day I'll put it up on a webpage. So if you've never toured a Southern Plantation, now's your chance. If for some reason they don't open, lemme know.

photo of where we ate. The Cafe is located in one of the satelite houses, this one was the Pool Cabana, aka "The Rough House" because of all the wild parties that went on there during the roaring 20's.

My many-times-great uncle was 4th Governor of Florida. Madison Starke Perry.

Very cool pictures. It's amazing the things I missed while I was up there. I'll have to check this all out next time I'm up there.
